Swing Life Away
Intro: Kellin Quinn
Am I loud and clear?Verse 1: Machine Gun Kelly
Or do I gotta screamLike I did every day when I was a troubled teen, huh?Do you wanna know my pastAnd see every single scar, know what they mean, huh?Seventeen running up in Mickey D'sBegging for a double cheese, huhSinging, "I don't wanna grow upDon't nobody like you when you're twenty-three"I came from nothing but a fucking unsupportive father I don't ever seeI had to watch a crooked jury put my brother in a penitentiaryI never fit in, criticism made me the man I couldn't beI'm reminiscing on when life was differentSpending every day at Chuck E. Cheese, uhChorus: Kellin Quinn
We live on front porches and swing life awayWe get by just fine here on minimum wageIf love is a labor, I'll slave 'til the endAnd I'll run these streets if you give me a chanceI've been here so longVerse 2: Machine Gun Kelly
Maybe I should run awayTry to find a summer dayWhat is love? Love is painLove is butterflies and stomach achesLove is looking out a windowpaneTears dripping, looking like you in the rainFor someone you don't even knowBut for somebody you may never see again, uhI am only alive onceAnd I'ma die when God wantsSo fill the sky with diamonds'Cause that's how it's gon' look when I'm goneHad a vision as a kid that one dayI would change the world with my songSeveral years have passed and now that vision came to lifeThat boy's a fucking iconChorus: Kellin Quinn
We live on front porches and swing life awayWe get by just fine here on minimum wageIf love is a labor, I'll slave 'til the endAnd I'll run these streets if you give me a chanceBridge: Machine Gun Kelly
Sometimes I don't want to fucking wake upWhen all they wanna do is bring me downAnd all the things I went through as I came upAre the fucking reasons why I run this townChorus: Kellin Quinn & Machine Gun Kelly

The song looks back on a rough youth and asks for understanding from listeners who may never have lived it. It opens with Kellin Quinn checking whether his voice is heard, and Machine Gun Kelly then describes his teenage years: a absent father, a brother lost to a courtroom verdict, feeling out of place, and spending days at fast-food restaurants and Chuck E. Cheese. The mood is raw and defiant, with the narrator admitting he was a troubled kid and insisting that the pain shaped him into who he is.
The second verse moves from memory into reflection on love, pain and mortality. Love is described as butterflies, aching stomachs and tears in the rain, something tangled up with loss. The narrator accepts that he will die one day and imagines that his absence will look like a sky full of diamonds, a picture of his legacy shining after he is gone. He then says a childhood dream of changing the world through music has come true. The bridge admits that some days he doesn't want to get up, but these hard experiences are exactly why he now leads.
The chorus repeats the central image of "front porches" and "swinging life away", which suggests a simple, slow, unhurried life where ordinary people get by on modest wages. "If love is a labor" turns love into work worth sacrificing for, and "I'll run these streets" claims a place in the world if given a chance. The outro repeats "swing life away" until it becomes a call to let go and enjoy the moment.
